Rogue Group of Retired Turkish Officers Planning Assassination of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

A network of Turkish retired officers was planning even the murder of Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomew according to investigations conducted by Turkish judicial authorities. The network was dismantled last month when weapons and explosives were found near in a hovel near Konstantinopolis. "Aksam" newspaper says that evidence on the planning of Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomew assassination was found in the hard disc of the "National Forces Union" president, Bekir Ozturk. The same organization seems to have been planning assassinations of the Armenian Patriarch and Jewish businessman, Isaac Alaton, whose partner Gary was murdered under unknown conditions.

Bekir Ozturk was arrested within the framework of interrogations about the organization of retired officers who possessed an arsenal of grenades, bombs and other weapons taken from the army. The network of retired officers was cooperating with the nationalist organization " Movement of Patriotic forces and other 4 organizations. The organization was founded on December, 27, 2006 and has 105 offices in 40 districts and 600.000 members.

The ecumenical Patriarchate has in the past experienced grenade attacks, claimed by an organization called IBDA, believed to be of Islamic roots. However, grenades and explosives used in the attacks came from military warehouses and in some cases their serial numbers were recognized by NATO procedures.

According to "Aksam" newspaper judicial authorities have called security authorities and intelligence services to strengthen security of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Armenian Patriarch and Isaac Alaton.

Plans to assassinate Armenian Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan, Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew and Turkish Jewish businessman İshak Alaton were found on a computer belonging to Bekir Öztürk, head of the National Forces Association (Kuvva-i Milliye).
 
According to the Gazeteport Internet news portal, the ultra-nationalist organization could have carried out these plans during the presidential election if either Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan or another Justice and Development Party (AK Party) member were to have been elected president.

The report said the assassination plans found on Öztürk’s computer were part of the ongoing Ümraniye investigation. It was noted that the public prosecutor’s office has demanded an increase in security measures from the Security General Directorate to protect Mutafyan, Bartholomew and Alaton.

After finding 27 hand grenades and other explosives in a slum house in the Ümraniye district of İstanbul, the security forces went on to raid Kuvva-i Milliye offices in Ankara, Konya, Bursa and Balıkesir over the past week. A total of five people, including Öztürk, have now been arrested in connection with the investigation.

Turkish law enforcement discloses Archbishop Mutafyan murder plot

A criminal organization of retired officers plotting the murder of Greek Orthodox Church, Patriarch Bartholomew I and Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church Mesrob Mutafyan, was disclosed in Istanbul.

Aksham newspaper reports that weapons and explosive assemblies belonging to the Union of National Forces were found by law enforcers not far from Istanbul in June 2007.

The information on the planned murders was kept in the computer belonging to organization leader Bekir Ozturk.

Jewish entrepreneur Isaak Alaton, whose partner was killed not long ago, was also included in the list of victims.
